How to Choose the Right Guitar Teacher for Your Child.

Updated: Dec 31, 2025

When a parent looks for a music teacher for their child, it is easy to focus first on price. However, in education — and especially in the musical education of young children — price is the least important criterion.

What truly matters is who will stand beside the child. An educator with experience teaching children, a clear methodology, a structured program, and material adapted to their age. A teacher who has been meaningfully involved in educational projects, who has created teaching materials or bibliography, and who understands how a child learns — not how an adult performs.

Music is not taught through improvisation. It requires planning, consistency, and long-term thinking. Above all, it requires a teacher who sees teaching as a vocation, not as a temporary or supplementary source of income.

A good performer is not automatically a good teacher. In practice, they usually are not.The ability to play music well is fundamentally different from the ability to teach a child how to love music and grow through it.

Some simple tips for choosing a music teacher:

  • Ask whether there is a specific program and clear goals appropriate for your child’s age.

  • Learn about the teacher’s experience with children, not only their studies or performances.

  • Ask to see the teaching material or bibliography they use.

  • Notice whether the teacher takes an interest in getting to know your child as a personality, not just as a student.

  • Pay attention to whether they talk about long-term development, rather than quick results.

Choosing the right teacher is not only about today — it is about shaping your child’s relationship with music for many years to come.
